Let’s remember, when we write, we are writing for an audience. Certainly that audience can change – there is no one “right way to write.” The change in tone we adopt for an audience is called a “register.”
What I do when I proofread is consider my client’s audience and the message they are trying to get across.
For example, sometimes I proofread children’s’ books, so I try to keep the language simple and accessible. Sometimes, I proofread PhD theses, and I keep the register higher.
Kalau saya pergi makan kat kedai makan Kelantan, saya tidak cakap macam ini.
Kalau kawe gi make kat kedai make kelate kawe kecek macam ni jer
See the difference?
So let’s not argue about register. Choose the style that is right for your audience.
